GKMS - Generic Knowledge Management System – Follow up

Partner: CONCEPT Data Systems Systemanalyse und Softwareentwicklung GmbH

The goal of this project is the design and partial implementation of an information warehouse for internal use in small companies under consideration of knowledge management aspects: different types of information such as e-mail, office documents, and company data are stored, structured, brought into context, and can be searched via an unifying portal. The information existing in the system is being made textually available and through the extraction of meta-information a unified, comfortable search in the whole stock of documents is realized. A contextualized combination of the information returned by the search query can help to simplify knowledge-creation and -transfer. Because most of the information is customer-relevant data, we also research the coherences to customer relationship management systems.

In this follow up of the project started the year before, we improved the time tracking system and implemented various information viewers and a trouble ticket system.

Meta Knowledge Management

Strategic Research Project

Today's research activities in the area of knowledge management examine how tacit knowledge can be appropriated and codified for organizational memories. The objective is to make people's tacit knowledge explicitly available for the organisation.
The other way around - how organizational knowledge can be efficiently used by people is regarded very rarely. The question how to derive knowledge for people from organizational knowledge must be taken more into account. The project's objective is to design and apply appropriate concepts.
The project started with a general survey on current research activities. Based on those results, drawn conclusions have been reversed and a concept has got designed. Scenarios have lead to indicators, which show where the concept has to be refined depending on organization-specific characteristics.

Recommend - People-Locator and Recommender Systems

Partner: Research Institute for Applied Knowledge Processing, FAW Ulm, Germany

The objective of the recommend project is to meet retrieval needs of users in complex knowledge spaces. Experience has shown that it is important for users to be able to assess which knowledge carriers within the system are "similar" or "complementary" to others. Knowledge carriers can be users as well as other resources including documents and search queries. The application environment providing a large document base is PADDLE, the "Personal Adaptable digital Library environment", a project developed with participation of the Know-Center.
To be able to make similarities explicit and accessible for users we define parameterized similarity measures on the basis of meta-data. The primary focus is on similarity measures based on thematic meta-data, describing the content of a knowledge carrier with a few keywords. We implement these concepts in JAVA and integrate them into PADDLE. To evaluate the effectiveness of these measures in the context of PADDLE we analyze how well the retrieval results achieved using different sets of parameters match with the subjective judgment of domain experts.

Technology Survey and Scenarios for Knowledge Management

Partner: Hyperwave Software Research & Development Ges.m.b.H.

WFM-II - Workflow Management (Phase 2)

Partner: Hyperwave Software Research & Development Ges.m.b.H.

The project "Workflow Management (Phase 2)" is the sequel to the project that started in 2001.
The aim of this project is to evaluate, how a "Workflow Management System" is to integrate into a Document Management System (DMS) and what enhancements such a combination would achieve. The project concentrates on how to control and optimize the transfer and flow of knowledge: The ultimate goal of a Workflow- and Knowledge-Flow-System is to assure, that the correct information attains to the proper persons in an accurate time. Some of the results of the project were:

  • Analyze of the results of Phase 1 of the "Workflow Management System" project
  • Definition of enhancements to the prototype system developed in Phase 1
  • Evaluation of technical requirements for the implementation of a "Workflow Management System"
  • Implementation of an enhanced prototype system to proof the value and usefulness of the combination of a "Workflow Management System" and a "Document Management System"

WGU - Knowledge Management in Large Enterprises

Partner: Infonova Information Technology

The aim of this project is to design a concept for project management support, integrated firmly in an organisation's knowledge management system. For this purpose a case study at the Know-Center has been carried out. The project management processes have been analyzed and modelled. The processes have been described in several level of details and have been provided as a part of a knowledge management system.
The project's result is a concept for the support of project management processes integrated in an organisation's knowledge management system.

eLearning in the Operational Training at Magna-Steyr

Partner: Magna-Steyr Fahrzeugtechnik Ges.m.b.H., Graz

For large companies as Magna-Steyr occupational training is a challenge of increasing importance. The demands which the employees and especially the knowledge workers are confronted with are changing continuously. Need for training and education is announced by the different strategic levels.

To account for the educational requirements the development and the establishment of a company-wide standardized training and education is needed. Only, it is hard to implement because of the the size of the company and the complexity of its organisational structures with the different and multiple responsibilities. Additionally, education is difficult to organize because of a great part of the staff working in shift operation. Conventional training hardly applies to this workers.

As a promising alternative the integration of eLearning into the present education is suggested. The key points of the project are therefore the implementation of eLearning and its combination with traditional methods.

SBX - Online Supplement for a Schoolbook in Biology

Partner: Leykam Buchverlagsges.m.b.H., Graz

One aim of the Austrian educational policy is the middle-term implementation of eLearning as an integral part of the teaching and learning methods in instruction. In the school year 2003/2004 for the first time the Austrian schoolbook campaign will offer a combination of print and online media. This can be seen as a milestone in the integration of eLearning into the traditional education in schools. In the sense of a competition innovative conceptions concerning eLearning contents have to be announced and submitted until June 2002.

The cooperation project is currently occupied with the development of such a conception for submission. The conception will contain the SBX-contents of volume 1 and 2 of a four-volume schoolbook series in biology.

Skills Management

Partner: Gosch Consulting, Hyperwave, Magna-Steyr Fahrzeugtechnik

Skills Management examines employee competencies – knowledge, abilities and skills – in an organisation with the aim to make them more transparent, apply them and develop them further. The current project is a cooperation project between the Gosch Consulting, Hyperwave, Magna-Steyr and the Know-Center. It highlighted differnt aspects within the broad domain of skills management.

First of all, a broad review of approaches that are connected with skills management initiatives lead to the development of a general methodology which offers methods and tools for introducing skill management into a company. The methodology differentiates between four areas of application which lead to different purposes of a skills management initiative in a specific case: human resources (e.g. development), knowledge management (e.g. expert search), project planning (e.g. team assignments) and strategic management (e.g. intellectual capital management).

Within a case study at Magna Steyr Engineering, a skills management instrument was then introduced to support human resources development.

A third part of the project was concerned with establishing sotware requirements for a skills management software. These requirements were derived from typical customer requirements and from experiences made within the case study.

Storyboarding

Partner: Dynamic Media Ges.m.b.H., Leykam Buchverlagsges.m.b.H.

Currently, authoring tools serving for the construction of eLearning courses support the generation of teaching and learning contents in a very broad and global way. Next to the creation and making-up of course contents mostly these tools also allow for the implementation and management of tests and exams and/or additional aids (lexica, dictionaries, thesaurus…).

Even though the degree of user-friendliness and the breadth of functionalities is quite high, the authoring tools do not consider the conceptional and creative phase of designing an eLearning course.

In the project this latter fact is discussed. The aim is to establish methods that upgrade the authoring tools for eLearning and to integrate supplementing functionalities as a fixed part of the tools. The project is a cooperation project between the Know-Center and its partners Dynamic Media and Leykam Publishing. It is divided into three phases.

Phase 1: Examination of the functional requirements of storyboarding in the domain of eLearning.
Phase 2: Market-survey concerning storyboarding software in the domain of eLearning.
Phase 3: Definition of the requirements for storyboarding by the users.
